The Hidden Hives
How it started
My eldest son asked for bees for his 16th birthday and so in preparation, we both enrolled onto a weekend course on ‘basic beekeeping’. I subsequently decided to try making (and hopefully) selling fragranced candles using beeswax - to help him fund this new hobby. At the moment we have to buy our beeswax, as we do not have enough hives to be able to use our own but ultimately this is our aim.
Long story short, it has been a challenge learning to make candles using this wax! It has taken a good few years of endless testing, frustration and tears just to get me to this stage and I have barely scratched the surface. Even though the whole process has (at times) been an absolute torment - I was determined to overcome these difficulties due to the unique qualities and benefits that beeswax brings.
Working with this completely natural and incredibly dense wax has its ‘quirks’ - no two batches of beeswax for example are ever the same, as the composition changes depending upon what flowers the bees have foraged. One of the benefits however is that when beeswax is burned, negative ions are released into the air causing airborne particles such as dust, toxins and odours to fall to the ground – acting as an air purifier.
Although I adore essential oils and use them in all my skincare products, I tend not to use them in my fragranced candles, as some of these oils can release harmful compounds into the air when they are heated to a high temperature - they also (in general) have a low flash point. As beeswax has a high melt point, I decided to use top grade fragrance oils, which are designed to be used safely in wax products.
Therefore, using beeswax blended with a little coconut wax (to increase the scent diffusion) and high-quality fragrance oils, which are free from parabens and phthalates (synthetically produced chemicals) was my goal for producing a premium candle – which not only smelled beautiful, burned as healthily and cleanly as possible but was also as sustainable and as biodegradable as possible.
Along the way, we have expanded our range of products from the botanical wax melts and tealights to room and linen mists, reed diffusers, car diffusers and our new ‘statement’ reed diffusers - which hold 1 litre of our beautiful fragranced oils. In addition to home fragrance, we also make our own traditional cold processed soaps, aromatherapy shower steamers, my unique blend of bath tea infusions and our ever popular treatment candles, all using beautiful blends of natural butters, oils and pure essential oils, which are both beneficial and kind to your skin, offering the ultimate in deep moisturisation.
We are constantly evolving and adding new bits and pieces to our growing range of products, so please do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like any advice or help with anything at all – I will look forward to hearing from you.
